From the dawn of history, women have been blamed and punished merely for
being women. In the past, women were tortured and humiliated for being
“gabbers” and “gossips” by ripping their tongues out of their mouths; if found
guilty for treason, they were tied in bondage and put on display; they were
burned at the stake on accusations of witchcraft and more.
Even today, in our patriarchal society, women are punished for being women;
in Israel today, a woman is killed every week and a half.
I have designed and created accessories to highlight the body parts that were
historically most manipulated and tortured: the mouth, the hair, the heart, the
legs, and their private parts. Through this work, I aim to share the stories of
women throughout history and argue that nothing has really changed since.
Materials used: vegan leather, cotton fabric, cotton ropes, brass, bark from an
olive tree, human hair, bee wax and epoxy.
Techniques: artisanal handicrafts, including classic jewelry, knitting, weaving,
cutting and sewing, and work with leather and wood.
